Time to spotlight our graduating seniors! First up is Aliyah Lockett.
Aliyah was born in Evanston and has been dancing at Kaleidoscope for 11 years. She started dancing at Kaleidoscope when she was 7 years old and her first class at the studio was a Jazz/Hip Hop. She now takes Ballet, Jazz, and Contemporary.
Her favorite style of dance is Contemporary because she enjoys the fluidity of the movements, and watching contemporary dancers.
Her favorite Kaleidoscope Dance memories are all of the tech weeks she's had because she feels like she always grow closer to her team during the long hours spent rehearsing during the week. She also enjoys being able to rehearse on stage with the lighting.
She describes Kaleidoscope as a place where you’re able to grow. Through Kaleidoscope she has grown as person, becoming a lot more confident and outgoing through the classes she's taken and through the teachers that have taught and mentored her. In her words, "They have taught me to be the very best version of myself and never feel afraid to try new things. I have also grown as a dancer, learning new styles and techniques of dance every day."
Her favorite dance piece of all time? "Monster," choreographed by Tarah Durnbaugh, "Because it was my first hip hop dance. I loved the costumes and always had fun performing that dance."
Aliyah loves to dance because it is a great stress reliever and it allows her to express her feelings. Plus it’s a great workout!
In the fall, she is doing a year at Oakton Community College and will be transferring to the University of San Francisco in the Fall of 2020. She's majoring in Business and undecided on her minor.
Aliyah is a truly special young woman who we've had the privilege of seeing grow up in our studio. We will miss her dearly and wish her the very best in all her future endeavors!
